KCTV5 reported this morning the the Shawnee Mission School District is considering eliminating 33 “special ed teachers” as part of the budget cuts. Parents of children who receive special education need to be aware of who is teaching their child.
No Child Left Behind as well as the IDEA provide that qualified teachers be instructing our students. Elimination of certain special ed teachers would not comply with NCLB and IDEA in the event the qualified teacher is not instructing the student who requires such teacher.
Parents need an experienced child advocate to assist when dealing with the school to ensure our kids’ education is appropriate. It’s easy to be misinformed and mislead; often not knowing it sometimes for years. An advocate’s presence in an IEP or accommodation meeting makes a difference. Don’t be bamboozled!
