If you have given consent for your child to have “counseling” with a mental health profrssional at the public school, have you been up to the school lately to sit in on a session with your child? Some districts have visiting mental health counselors who have regularly-scheduled visits with children.
Questions parents need to ask prior to giving consent may include:
Are you aware my child has special needs and an IEP?
*What experience do you have working with special needs’ kids?
*Since my child has a disability, how will your sessions handle it?
*What is my child’s disability and do you understand how his way of dealing with things may be different from typical children?
*Did you ask me for information regarding what treatment/counseling the child is receving elsewhere?
*What are the goals of these sessions?
*Are you including the school district’s psychologist in implementing outcomes?
*Did you consult with my child’s teacher on the dynamics of the situation?
The public can check with a state’s registry (board) over mental health/social worker/behavorial science professionals to see if there are any pending complaints related to the mental health worker.
